Aircraft maintenance can be both expensive and time consuming. It is much more efficient if the aeroplane can report where maintenance is needed for itself.

The best solution would be a sensor system, which even has its own power supply and makes it independent of electrical wiring.

EADS Germany in co-operation with the Institute of Sensor and Actuator Systems at Vienna University of Technology has developed such a device.

To make the sensor independent of batteries and wiring the idea of the ‘thermoelectric energy harvester’ was developed.
The information gathered by the sensor is sent wirelessly.

The sensor makes aircraft maintenance easier and simpler to accomplish.
